Cherry Blossom Care: Understanding The Basics

When I bought a house with a cherry blossom tree in the front yard, I couldn't wait for that first blooming season to see the tree fill out. I knew that the tree needed care, but I wasn't sure how I was supposed to treat it. I called my local tree service and had them show me what it needed to keep it strong. I took all of the information they shared with me and everything else I've learned and created this site. After days and weeks of toiling, planting, shoveling, and fertilizing, you're finally close to creating the backyard of your dreams. However, there is one eye sore that is still standing in your way, and you're not exactly sure how to eliminate it: a tree stump. Tree stumps can be tricky to get rid of, especially if you don't have the right tools and know-how. Here are a few simple methods you can use to eliminate tree stumps and when to know it's time to call a professional:

Getting Rid of a Smaller Stump

If the stump isn't large and it was a young tree, the best method is to simply dig it out. This is a great option because it's cheap and you can typically accomplish this chore in a single weekend. To begin, eliminate any limbs or braches from the stump with a handsaw or chainsaw.

Next, begin digging around the perimeter of the stump. This will not only help you expose the stump; it will also allow you to get at the root system. It's critical to cut off the majority of the roots from the stump because if you leave them behind, the young, healthy roots could begin growing.

Once you've exposed the majority of the roots, it's time to begin cutting them into manageable pieces. Depending upon the amount of area you have and your experience with lawn tools, you can use a manual or electric root or hand saw. Be aware that if you use an electric root or hand saw, it's important to ensure you have enough room to use the tool safely and that you always wear work gloves and safety goggles.

Cut each of the roots into smaller pieces and toss them into a pile to be disposed of later. Once you've removed the majority of the stump's roots, it's time to remove the stump itself. If the stump is small enough, you might be surprised how easy it is to simply dig underneath it and pull it out of the ground.

If the stump is larger or heavier than you expected, consider hiring a professional to handle this chore.

Getting Rid of an Older Stump

Eliminating a stump that is dead and has been decaying in your backyard for quite a while can be accomplished with a bottle of stump remover. This product, which can be found at your local hardware or home improvement store, will begin to break down the stump, making it easier to remove from the ground.

The active ingredient in these products is potassium nitrate, which is also known as saltpeter. To use the product, begin by drilling several holes deep into the stump. Next, pour the potassium nitrate into the holes, according to the package directions. Gardening expert Ed Hume recommends dumping hot water into the holes after you've applied the saltpeter.

The hot water will help the potassium nitrate dissolve, which will allow it to absorb into the stump much more effectively. Finally, allow the potassium nitrate to slowly destroy the stump over the next few weeks. Eventually, the stump will be turn very soft, which will allow you to pull it out of the ground.

Calling in A Professional

Finally, there are instances when the stump won't budge and you will need to call in a professional for assistance. For example, if the stump is quite large, the best tool to eliminate the nuisance is called a stump grinder. This tool requires expertise to utilize, and should only be handled by a professional.

Additionally, if you don't feel comfortable removing the stump on your own, or simply don't have the time, don't hesitate to contact a professional for help.

Removing an unsightly tree stump from your yard is a lot easier than you think. Simply follow the above-mentioned tips and when it doubt, call a professional tree care service for assistance.
